I’ve always been a reader but faced with race in a new way, along with the rest of our nation and much of the world, books became yet again, agents of humility – a sea of words letting me know how much I don’t know. And brilliant new works sprang forth from isolated authors.
Nature became the only outing possible and we remembered its magic. Two new prints in this collection are in tribute to the remembrance of the joy of being outside that came when we were all forced inside. Outside the Window is the next print and it speaks for itself. Even picking weeds to arrange when there were no flowers became a simple daily pleasure.
Trips were cancelled and an entire year’s social calendar vanished. While there was some sadness in things missed, simplicity became so satisfying. This print is a playful nod to it and the space it created.
There were also less serious things like Tiger King and hours on Tik Tok where I laughed so hard I cried and board games and card games and the passing of time became both an art and a science. But to find things to do and play and pass the time came without the guilt it usually has and this print, called Playtime, is a reminder that it can always be as acceptable as it was in 2020.

Metamorphosis is the first and it’s named for not just the monarch’s magical process but for what happened to so many on the other side of suffering.
I returned to painting in 2020 and was reminded that sometimes the easel is the only place I can work things out. These faces still most represent to me reflection, hence its name and that which so many of us were able to do in a new way.
For the first time our family planned its day around meals. And taking hours to plan, purchase and prepare dinner became common and the most talked about thing of the day. It felt like we had gone backwards in time a bit and the table became sacred again. Sacred Table is the name of this print and it will forever remind me of gathering around homemade meals like never before.
